FREE KHALFANI

What should presenlly stand out in peoples’ minds
concerning the the case of Comrade Bro. Khalfani X.
Khaldun, is the fact that is has been four years since he was
fist charged with the murder of @ prison guard and he has
vetlo be lried. Cases of Ihis nalure are usually swilly deall
with. Why has the State of Indiana prolonged this high
profile case for so long? It seems obvious to us that the case
Is deeply flawed and being dragged out fo produce the
maximum effect, externally. Usually the state can conjure
P “ideal” evidence fo “justity” pushing for life in prison or
the death penally. Again, none of this has been advanced
inthe case of the Stale of Indiana vs Khalfani X. Khaldun!

So. as we begin to Ideologically and siralegically devise
our plans to make the state as uncomfortable as possible,
we want fo provide Information o help people push forward
the idea to free Khalfani X. Khaldun. During these last four
years, all support has been sporalic and episodic. It must
become much more organized and effective.

A Free Khalfani X. Khaldun campaign, if designed
comeclly, could produce some advancved, desired effects.
The State of Indiana Is clearly ill-prepared 1o Iry this case in
court, for lack of credible evidence. However, there is
another important, if rarely discussed component fo the
equalion. The United Snakes Supreme Court has recognized
that because kapilal punishment is uniquely irreversible,
they require safeguards against procedural errors.

The two-phased judgement and sentencing frial,
auromalic state review, post-conviction hearings and
Supreme Court pelitions are extremely coslly lo Ihe slafe in
terms of both money and human resources. In mos! stales,
such as California, kapital frials are six limes more cosfly
than other murder trials! Judges, prosecutors, public
delenders and coun reporters ure unavailavie for ofhar
assignments during these lengthy proceedings. 1

Selection of juries and pre-frial molions are also more
drawn out in kapital cases and "expert” (whalever that
means!) investigators and consultants, such as psychiatrists,
must offen be retumed fo court. Addilionally, ihe costs of
maintaining dealh rows in stafe prisons, holding clemency
hearings and the ordeal of the aclual execution, must be
added fo the price of kapilal punishment.

CONTRADICTIONS

Eventhe most exhauslive safeguards against a
miscariage of juslice cannof produce an infallible justice
system. False festimony, mistaken idenfification,
misrepresentation of evidence and communily prejudices
and pressures may affect both verdict and sentencing.
AMtomeys' errors in judgement, proseculorial misconduct,
delayed access or wilhholding of evidence, may also
contribule fo the execufion of an innocent person.

Four years of delays has affected Ihe state’s case against
Knhalfaniin fheir atemp o convic! this comrad. These
delays have exposed the weaknesses and served lo
question the validily of the inilial charges.

slate wilnesses who were idenfified os "eyevitnesses”

have since recanted their prior testimony. This literally,
cripples the state’s case! The investigator who coerced
these stalements from these “wilnesses” during his “infernaly
prison level” investigation, was fired for official misconduct
and drug frafficking! He's no longer employed by the
1.0.0.C.. thus his Investigation documents are rendered
useless, due lo his misconduct. The defense must now move
to have all discovery evidence by Karl Swihart "suppressed”
ond further excluded. Several officers who were "key"
figures for the State, who worked D-Cell-I!ouse of the fime of
the stabbing on 12-13-94 have also since been fired. Officer
C.L. Jones has been recenlly busted for bringing pounds of
smoke into the Indiana State Prison! He was escorted off
prison grounds In Michigan City, Indiana and placed in fhe
cutody of the LaPorte County police authorities. Now, an
outcast from his fellow police comrades, he has lost the
support of the slale and could not make a $500.00 bond.
Needless fo say, his once unblemished record and
character, lay in wins. He is now open for atlack from the
forces of Khallani's defense and useless fo the stale as a
witness in this case.

Depositional documents taken by the defense, of officers
who claim to have responded fo the 10 - 10 emergency call
the night of the stabbing a D-Cell-House (Ihe predalor unit
at the prison) expose rampant lying, guessing games and
speculation, which are conlrary to having actually
witnessed the stabbing.

Malicious Intent

Personally, ofher outrages have been inllicted upon
Khallani X. Khaldun since being charged on January 31.
1995, after he was lransferred fo the Maximum Conlrol
Complex (since changed fo the Maximum Cantrol Facility.)
All clothes and property belonging lo Khallani was
confiscated by Karl Swihart - the guy who has been fired for
misconduct! Things belonging to the deceased officer were
purposely placed in the box sent o the M.C.F. facility, after
leaving the Internal Affairs Office. Medical staff misled
Brother Khiafani into believing a “court order” obligated him
to submit o a drawing of his blood. This, supposedly was lo
allow the prosecution fo run DNA fesling on him. This sham
was later exposed. A civil suit was filed by Khallani
challenging the illegal seizure of his blood, which occurred
on June 6, 1995, drawn by Lisa Homer, LPN.

Harassmen

Alter a search of his cell by eight officers, a cull key was
discovered by Khalfani. It was tumed over fo the cour and
entered into record as further harassment and hoslilties
being expressed by the prison staff. Pictures of the dead
officer were placed on various walls in the prison. They stil
remain there - four years laterl This speaks of .D.0.C.
hostility and resentment to this day over this fatal incident.
You can Imagine how they feel about Khalfani, who they are
convinced s the perpetralor of this murder, who has been
retumed o this facility.

Intemally, Khalfani X. Khaldun has suffered yet another
charge that has altered his release from prison by three
years. Thal shows wrongful incarceralion, basea on belng
found “guilly” by the prison Conduct Adjustment Board on
this homicide charge, which has nof even been sent o friall
5o, if fhis bogus case was not brought against Bother
Khiafani X. Khaldun, he would have been released by now!
He has thus missed the chance fo spend quality time with
loved ones, comrades, children and friends because of this
vindicfive, spiteful and unprosecutable case!

In 1997, he experienced fhree deaths in his family. His
two brothers were killed and his beloved mofher passed
from hearibreok and cancer.

This murder charge has caused much grief in his family
and ullimately prevented him from re-connecling with them
on the outside. This could have and shouid have been
done, had he been released!

For the past four years, he has had fo rise from his rest,
feeling doomed by Ihe planned assault on his life by the
stale’s repressive while supremicist injuslice system.

state Sanctioned Arrogance

since being found "guilly” (inlernally) on the charge of
homicide, the stafe has seen fit fo Iry fo present an image of
Khalfani as “unconirollable.” This will somehow compell the
court to reach a guilly verdicl on this murder charge. This
image is created by filing a serles of bogus conduct
sanclions on a variely of conlrived issues. This serves to dirty
up his packel and “proves" his incorrigible nalure as o not
obeying rules, being disruptive and menacing slaff. This
leads one to believe that Khalfani is also overlly violent. Up
unlil this "guilty” verdict, the negative reports on his conduct
were minor and very frivolous.

While at the Indiana reformatory house on G.AS. for
nearly two years, he was “aclive” and experiencing
“violalions” while awailing Irial. Trying lo be cool and

slaying out of the way of frouble, does not insure that the ~ 7
stale won't bring it fo you! On November 22, 1998, eight
men on G.A.S. were released for “oulside” recreation. This is
the group Khalfani had been wilh for nearly two tears.

Some hostililies ensued by two offenders, atter a ball
game. It was nothing deadly serious, but serious none-fhe-
less. One of the prisoners involved was a known member of
the Aryan "White Supremicist” Brotherhood. The ofher guy
was a convict, who is known throughout the 1.D.0.C. None
of the aggression was wilnessed by any member of the
prison staff on the G.A.S. Unit. The next day, November 23,
1998, saw the stalf lock down the whole unil and begin a
serles of cell searches. Two Aryan Brolherhood prisoners
were Immediately escorted out o the I.A. ofiice. This was
done while the process of weapons searches was ongoing.

We realize that prison Is a microcosm of the larger
soclely. Just as sociely keeps weapons for securily and
prolection purposes, 5o 100 does the same reality exist in
prison. Sell-preservalion is essential fo survival, perhaps
especially in prison. Early in the morning, prior fo the
searches, some people “warned" Khalfani that he would be
hit firs! by the search squad. So, In an alempt to secure his
sell-preservation, he sent some materials fo a friend, whose
frust he had secured some fime ago. Thinking he and the
eight men outside with him the day before would be the
only ones searched, it seemed a proper choice fo make.
These materials had been secured by fhis person belore, so
he was no biind fo what he was sent lo secure. The 1.0.0.C.
strike Search feam descended upon the prisoners and
searched Khalfani's cell.

The report stated that an offender pulled over an officer,
gave him the clandestine materials and advised them that
they belonged fo Khallani. The officer opened a box of
crackers fo reveal a weapon. This offender was
Immediately searched and the contents of the box were
pholographed and delivered, along with a lefter from this
offender, claiming the knife belonged to Khalfani.

This weapon and the story of who il belonged 1o, was
enough fo convince the 1.0.0.C. that a fight fook place and
Khalfani was behind it or provoked it. But no evidence
could prove Ihis claim. Several snitch nofes sent in on
Khalfani, manufactured a scenario for the investigators to
draw “speculalive conclusions” and served as tha hrsic far
issuing conduct reporls lor lighling {a class B 212) to thiee
people - Wille Silas, Willam "Crime Wave” Long and T
Khalfani X. Khaldun.

As reported eatlier, the two parlies who exchanged
verbal words of aggression were Willie Silas and Willlam
Long. Khallani X. Khaldun had nothing fo do with Ihis. In
fact, it was quelled by Khaltani. As a matter of convenience
and timing, Indiana reformatory Investigators Included
Khalfoni info Ihese exchanges. In fact, the report stated that
Khallani struck William Long, three fimes. But how could
such a conclusion be inferred when no staff were present -
the entire recreation period - fo wilness the allercation? So,
it is clear that this reeks of manufactured implications.

After going fo fhe C.A 8. hearing fo challenge the charge,
it was defermined that all three prisoners were found guilty
of fighting.

Institutional Racism and Discrimination

The Board Chairman called for the white prisoner, Wiliam
Long. first. He was in the hearing for over an hour. Willie
silas was called next and finally. Khalfani. It was planned by
all o stick fo the facts - thal nothing had happened, but the
C.A.8. Ihrealened bolh prisoners with demotions of credit
class earned good fime. This would ultimately alter their

release date. Both were jus! a few months from being
released. They pleaded guily to fighting (under threat)
which affected Khallani's whole defense. So, when Khalfani
went in, he stated that he did not witness a fight nor was he
involved in one. They used the guilly pleas of Silas and Long
10 also find him guilly, claiming he was being dishonest.
Even affer being presented wilh seven prisoner statements
advising the same about his NON-involvement, including
statements by Silas and Long fo Ihis effect.

They slated Ihese stalements may have been procured
through intimidation by Khalfani X. Khaldun. After being
given one year segregalion starting December 12, 1998, he
was immediately Iransferred completely out of the
insfitution. Silas and another Afrikan prisoner were sent fo an
IRS Disciplinary Segregation unit after he got a year.
Recently, discoveries after filing an appeal to challenge the
sanction, have been made. Charles Miller wrote that
Knhallani was denied his appeal and was appropriately
placed. He also stated that he and Long did ol receive the
same sanctions. Whal s thal? if they all got one yearin §
disciplinary segregation, why wasn't this racist aryan
brotherhood member, William Long, segregated?

The answer to this is obvious, now. Long remained
housed on G.AS. because he received a suspended
sentence. This accomodation came with a price - that he
set up Khalfani, 50 as o ge him oul of that sefling. In the
four years of fhis case. they had no ofher aclion or
aggression fo pin on Khallani, until this incident. This charge
could now be used by the slate fo bolster a contention that
he had the emolional makeup fo commit the alleged
aggression against the prison guard. Thal was the plan.
“Now we can get him!"

The state’s molivations are clearly expressed through
their racism lowards Khallani X. Khaldun and what actions
have been taken against him. Don't you see this? The
prisonkrals and stalf of the Pendleton Correctional Facilty
hale Khallani because he has been accused for the last four
years of killing one of Iheir own. To have him anywhere else
than death row, they seem o feel, would be rubbing it info
thelr faces. So, this recent sel-up and blatant expression of
racial discrimination is the resull of this whole process

(Solely to have him killed)

Prior 1o having these murder charges levelled against
Khalfani X. Khaldun, investigators had had him under walch
concerning some informalion provided fo the I.A. Unit at the
Indiana State prison. This implicated him and some brothers
close fo him al ihe fime, who were housed in D-Cell-House.
A certain individual who served as a porter on the range
where Khalfani was on, was the conduil. In an atfempt fo
gel a prison lransfer, he opportunistically provided
information about some bomb plof. A bomb was “found”
oulside D-Cell-House, which he claimed he got from
Khalfani X. Khaldun.

Once the state got what they thought was Ihe “plot of
plols” on Khalfani, they came atter him at full steam. This
was done several days after Ihis informant was secured
completely out of the inslilution. The events fo follow
preconditioned by prison investigators, caused severe
anguish for Khallani. This guy who was Idenlified as an
informant, was privileged fo some serious intelligence, which
he provided fo the authorities, implicaling ofhers. |

So, when they started a series of inlerrogations and
Khallani was interrogated. he disavowed any knowledge of
the conlent of the allegations being levelled against him.
He was threatened with outside charges and finger prinfed.
AMer all of the inferrogations were concluded, several
prisoners decelved by “planted seeds” provided by
investigators, became consumed with the idea that Khalfani
had implicated ofhers. Prisons are manipulated by these
investigators. What belter way to destroy his character and
credibility than to tell his associates that he snilched on
Ihem? Non-thinkers are always easily manipulated by these
prisonkrals. Some of these guys spreading these rumors
were reactionaries and they ran with these lies. No one was
ever charged in connection to this bomb discovery incident,
bul things are being done about if, now such as frying to
obtain alf of the “investigalive files.” A complaint (under the
Indiana Public Records Act,) is being filed. This is imporfant
1o clear up these false allegations against Khalfani that have
circulafed these last four years over this Incident.

5-14-3-3 Right of Inspection of Public Records

Sec. 3.(A) Any person may inspect and copy public
records of any public agency during the regular business
hours of the agency.

A request for inspection or copying musl:

(1) 1dentity with reasonable accuracy, particularly the
document requested; and

(2) Be ot the discreion of the agency in willing orin @
form provided by the agency.

No request may be denied because the person making
Ihe reques! refuses o state the purpose of the reques,
unless such condilion is required by other applicable
slatutes.

We want to gain access o these files lo bring closure to
so much anguish. Khallani X. Khaldun admils that there
were some securily breeches, concerning this informant. He
denies that he implicaled anyone and believes the files will
show this. Once Ihese files are obtained, many truths will be
revealed which wil vindicale Khallani X. Khaldun ffom any |,
fulure doubls or bad Jackeling. In par, the purpose of the
stale was served by crealing such a hoslile and suspicious
almosphere among old comiades. However, Khaliani has
maintained a firm position throughout this whole ordeal -
carrying scars bul also healing along the way.

Khalfani X. Khaldun has accepted his cilizenship as a
New Alrlkan Revolutionary Nationalist, as well as a politically
conscious and aclive prisoner, colonized in the Indiana
prison system. This citizenship makes him a member of the
Provisional Government of the Republic of New Afrika. He
also embraces he theoretical teachings of (N.ALM.) the
New African Independence Movement. He has established
relalions with the New Atrikan Liberation Front, Jericho
Movement and serves as Northwest Coordinalor for the aims
and theories of the Institule of Criminology 101 and the
George Jackson Grassrools movement. Comrad Abdul O.
Shakur is founder and president of both of these formations.

As a New Afrikan revolulionary nationalist, Khallani's
ideas and wiilings have graced the pages of many news
publications. I'l name a few - Prison Legal News, Prisoners
News Service, Prison Life Magazine, Gary Info, Nation Time,
The Bulletin, Final Call, Revolutionary Worker, Human Righls
Held Hoslage, Love & Rage, Peace Newsletter, Freedom
Network News, Workers World News, elc.

He also is the author of six publicaions or booklels on a
variely of issues. All of these have a New Afrikan oullook.
Also, they cover a series of revolutionary actions within the
prson communily, here in Indiana. Afier being infroduced
to New Afrikan theorelical material, much of his prison
activism has been guided by lhese ideals. Even though
Khalfani has not always been polilically conscious, Ihere is
documentation of some posilive conlributions made by him.
These conlribulions are guided by revolulionary principles
and revolutionary social praclice and are used fo challenge

Ihe state sanclioned injustices that permeate the various
Penal institutions, here in Indiana.

Khalfani X, Khaldun has strengthened his committment to
New Afrika and set out in his revolutionary exchanges and
studies what he stands for concernina the PG - RNA

(Provisional Government,) which means a femporary
government.) He teaches that all blacks are descendants
of slaves in North Amerika and are thus cilizens of the |2
Republic of New Alrika by birth. We have been snalched
from every region of Afiika and molded by this common
history of oppression and struggle Into a new Afrikan Nation
in this world.

When the PG-RNA was established on March 31, 1968, it
sel out fo inform black people of thelr rights under
international law which include the rights of self-
delermination, land and reparatlions. Since ils existence, the
PG-RNA has sharpened the theoretical basis for New Afrikan
political science, organized national elections for officials in
the goverment, demanded reparations from the U.S.
government, defended ilself against enemy altacks, sought
freedom, sell-govemment and sell-defermination. The
objectives sought by New Alrikans since arriving on these
shores, have now reached a higher stage.

In 1989, prisoners housed at the Indiana Reformatory
isolated on the Disciplinary Segregation Unit, organized a
colleclive sirike fo confront the unit violations. This strike
tosted about three weeks. This one intemal struggle, on a
colleclive scale, was one of the first aclions that had an

overwhelming impact upon Khalfani's political
developement. The effectiveness of mass parlicipation
among New Afrikan and North Amerikan prisoners alike,
was very spiritually uplifing and encouraging.
Revolutionary visions eventually matured as a result of this
struggle. Al the rest fo follow, were that much better
organized and victorious. This was not @ "hunger strike.” I
was a collective struggle. What was done here was, all the
prisoners were encouraged fo boycolt participation in the
daily running of the unit.

Al recrealion, showers, lalking to the administration and
Ihe serving of food, elc. was refused. This forced the staff to
have fo clean up, pass out food, and perform a host of
prisoner obligations, that prison staff would normally not
have to do. The slale responded by immedialely having
Khallani and about fen ofhers transferred fo Indiana Stale
Prison (ISP.) Refer lo the offidavit from Zaid, which confims
the details on this struggle. He was also Involved in the
application of this struggle.

since that fime, Khalfani has been lransferred from prison
fo prison. He has continuously played a role of educaling
and organizing prisoners, sharing malerials and assisting /3
prisoners. Khalfani has not been allowed in the general
prisoner population since 1987-1988. Since then, he has
been housed in reslricled unit after restricted unit. A lot of
this has been due to the overt instilutional racism of prison
staff and prison investigators. He has been labeled a gang
leader &/or revolulionary and subjected fo extensive stays
in Isolation because of his advocacy. This has been
Khalfani's reality.

Attacks on His Family and Local Supporters

In February, 1998, he was blessed by a special visit from
his fiance, who recently became liberated from her slave
name, (Isis Khaldun, formerly known as Penny Kennedy.)
The G.A.S. unit officers strip searched him and asked him to
open his mouth. Khallani temporarily refused, due to @
mouthtul of mint candy. Shorlly after this order, he opened
his mouth and was secured in his cell. They advised him
that a report was going fo be written for refusing a direct
order. Some days later, he was placed on nen-contact visit
status and alefter was sent fo the Superintendent by the
case managers, alleging that Khallani and his fiance were
trafficking on visits from the visitors room. What should be
understood here is that the stale deliberalely sef out to
destroy the character and repulation of Khallani's fiance, so
that she would be barred from the inslilution. By allering the
relationship of these visits, fhe slate's interes! was served -
that of singling out Khallani for special repression.

Assistance from comrad Mark Thiel of the Ruchell Magee
Defense Fund and other oulside pressures, persuaded the
state fo re-instate these visils, ninety days laler.

Power lo the People UHURU SASAI

A lot of networking with local Indiana colleges opened
the door for a lot of ofher relationships to develop. Young
comrades trom the Indiana University at Bloomington (1UB)
have been very consistent. In facl, a benefit concert was.
held on Oclober 27, 1998 at that university. A small group ol

aclivists have uniled inlo slaunch supporlers in Ihe fighi ior
Khallani's Ireedom. Ramona Alrika and her brothers were
present. Akono Jahi (recently released from prison) and his
lady Mandisa, spoke in support of Khalfani's freedom. They
also spoke of the importance of outside support and
organized efforts by the oulside in support and defense of
prisoners.

Recent Organized Effort by Khalfani & Several Oths MCF

On March 15, 1999 a collective hunger strike was
lounched in direct opposilion o violalions permealing the
Maximum Conlrol Facility. Khallani was successtul in
soliciling support from the while prisoners. The combined
efforts of Khalfani X. Khaldun, A Kono Olatunji, Anthony
Hogan and Tabono Ellsworth and oulside support came
together, in a demonsiration of effective solidarity.

The Strike lasted five days and was discontinued on
March 19, 1999. Khallani was called out by the Facility
Acling Superintendent, Mr. Mark Levinhagen. They
discussed the issues and visitafions and decided on some
solufions. Khalfani suggested that he also call out wo other
comrades, Akono Olalunji and Anthony Hogan, which he
did. They also addressed the issues. He also opled fo call
two while prisoners from thelr cells fo ge! Iheir imput.

After this meeling, prisoners were compelled fo come off
the strike lo exchange ideas on fhe solutions agreed upon.
A small victory of sorfs did occur, so they were temporarily
salisfied. The Acling Superintendent agreed to @ much
“larger meefing.” This was fo consist of five prisoners, himsell
and the facility rank-and-file. On the day of this scheduled
meeting, Mr. Mark Levinhagen was in a union meeling. So, i
didn't go according fo plan.

On March 24, 1999 o 1:30 p.m. Captain HyaHi called
down fo Khalfani X. Khaldun's cell and advised him to get
ready fo go up front. Khalfani had no idea what was going
on. He was laken fo the Superintendent's office. Herbert
Newkirk, Caplain Staples and Caplain Hyalt were present.
The Superiniendent had declared he had been contacted
by the Governor's office and oulside supporters - locally,
nalionally and infernalionally. Some comrades reached
him from Australia, even! This level of outside support, they
hadn't seen in years, so he was overly agilated. He agreed
that three of four of Ihe released demands would be mel, |S'
while adhering lo thew Standard Operaling Procedure
(5.0.P.) He claimed the larger meeling had to be cancelled
due to ofher requests being made fo affend the meeting
and the security risk if these requests were also granted. So,
he called only Khalfani out fo seal the solutions. Expected
changes will be forthcoming. Please nole thal it was the
combined efforts of everybody who contributed o this
action on Ihe inside and the oulside thal made these
developments possible and these efforts are much
appreciated. This combined effort was necessary fo expose
the violations, challenge the system and make some
agreeable changes. This was accomplished. Another plus
is that the oulside support network Is aware of this facility's
condilions and the authorities now know of this awareness,
also. This effort was warranled.

pressure.

(6) Take up collections to purchase T-Shirs, bullons, hats,
efc.in support of the free Khalfani Campaign.

(7) Join the team of supporters who have opled lo press the
judges and prosecutors in the case to dismiss this case.

(8) Join the United Family and Friends lo Free Khaltani and
commit yourself Io helping build a solid campaign lo free
Khalfani.

(9) Conlact Khallani fo arrange a visit 1o see him or maybe
make your car available o bring family members fo visit
him.

(10) Eslablish a holline capable of nelworking fo recruit

Reformatory on their lock up unit D/S as written about in

ATED SIRUGGLE IN THE SUMMER OF 1989 |1

1 was ficst introduced to Brother Khaltani X. Khaldunin the
fall of 1988, by Brother Shomare (s/n Ronnie Coley.) | was on
the administrative segregation unit in G Cell House (GCH)
which has a section of the cell house with iron gates and
fences physically separaling it from the rest of the cell
house. Khallani was in GCH and he often came up fo the
gate and hollered at me while | was on A/S. But, it wasn't
unlil Januaty of 1989, that we became better acquainted
and established a bond that still holds strong fo this very
day.

In January 1989, | was released from A/S and placed in
GCH. Less than thirty (30) days lafer, | was sen fo
disciplinary segregation (D/5) lor battery on staff. A couple
of months later, Khalfani was placed on D/S only a few cells
away from my assigned cell.

I've been in prison for seventeen (17) years and during
the course of my imprisonment, it has been my experience
that if's the nature of the Indiana Department of Corrections
(1D.0.C.) particularly In the maximum security Insfitufions, to
constantly increase iis repressive measures on the prison
populations and segregation unils.

In the late spring/early summer of 1989, the
administration at the Indiana Reformatory atiempted to
Increase Ifs repressive measures on its D/S unit by adding
additional petty institutional rules for the D/ unit and
enforcing them with petty conduct repors resulting in
extended D/S time as well as credit class demoions and
relentions. These measures had an adverse effect on the
prisoners In general and a very adverse effect on
fevolutionary minded prisoners in particular, who were
major fargels of repression. It became imperalive that the
prisoners would have 1o organize and devise some
stralegies to combat the iron-fisted factics employed by the
pigs on hat front.

The revolutionary elements on the sef brainstormed and
came up with the sirategy of shulting down the 2/4 side of
the D/S unil. We decided that everyone would refuse
recreation and showers; that the range tenders who swept
and mopped fhe ranges and served food would refuse to
work, consequently forcing the pigs fo do the work. And we
made extra sure that there was always plenty of trash on the
ranges for them o sweep. It was understood by every 20
prisoner on the 2/4 side that no one was fo replace the
range lenders who refused fo work. We went from cell fo
cell and approached every individual and informed them of
the sirategies we intended fo use fo force the adminisiration
10 negoliate with us aboul the Issues of our concem. At
which lime, we would orally reinforce our demands which
were already drafted on paper and sent fo fhe prison
superintendent by an anonymous sender. We were
successtul in organizing across raclal, Ideological and
organizational lines and drew the support of every single
prisoner on the 2/4 side of the D/S uni.

The revolufionary elements on the set at this fime were all
very young. None of us were older than 25 years old. We
also were all essentially in the early stages of our political
development and his situation provided us with an Ideal
opporiunily lo put some of our newly discovered
revolutionary theory info praclice. Personally for me, this
was my first involvement in ferms of organizing on a mass
scale. Even though my role was minimal in 'hat | wasn't one
of Ihe principlal movers and shakers of Ihis effort, | was
never-the-less a part of the core group that organized this
plan of resistance.

1 would venlure fo say that this was Khalloni's first
experience of parlicipaling in organizing on this level as
well. We were all full of that youthful fire and vigor, but also
maintaining the line and keeping our politics and objectives
in commend over our actions. Ulimalely, we commanded
the respect of the entire 2/4 side of the D/S unit and shut the
sef down. Everyone kept it fight and fowed the line for the
first week or so and during the course of this period, the.
contradictions between the prisoners and the pigs
sharpened, iremendously. The hostilities mounted as the
pigs became frusirated with their extra work load.
Somelhing would soon have fo give. Yet, there was no
doubt In our minds that it would never be us. About a week
or 5o Info our protest, one of the range lenders crossed the
demarcation line and came out for recreation. This was a
clear act of Ireason against the objectives of the collective.
Being that the 2/4 side was shut down, they ran his scab to
recreation with the 1/3 side of the D/S uni. This went on for
about a week. Everyone else confinued to low the line. The
range tender attempted to commit an even greater act of o
treason by trying to come out and serve breakdast fo the
prisoners. We immediately let it be known in no uncertain
terms that we would not tolerate this! Some of the prisoners
began to throw objects at this scab. The pigs saw that our
unity was strong and had no ofher cholce but fo lock the
scab back up In the cell and serve the food themselves.

Several days later, the prisoners decided fo come out for
showers only. But It was understood that we would confinue
on with our profest and force the plgs to confinue o sweep,
mop and serve the food.

The morning that we decided fo come out for showers,
the range tender that went against the objectives of the
collective suffered several stab wounds and was badly
beaten. Trumped up charges of batery were brought
against me, Khallani and a polltically consclous comrade
named Hasani. We all were ralloaded and convicted by

the racist Conduct Adjustment Board (C.A.B.) and each of us
were sentenced fo hree (3) additional years on D/s.

In an attempt o break up some of the leadership, the
Pigs moved some of us o the 1/3 side of D/S including
mysell and Khalfanl. We began eforls fo organize the 1/3
side. Unbeknownst to us, the administration had plans to
transfer all of us out of the camp. Altogether, six (8) of us
were ransferrrd fo the state prison in Michigan Cily,
including Khalfani and myself.

For securily reasons, obviously certain information won't
be disclosed In this wriling, but there were many lessons
learned in the summer of 1989, which I'm sure played a part
in all of our individual development.

My name is Bro. Khalfani X. Khaldun. [am a New Afrikan political
prisoner, colonized in the penal colony of the Indiana prison tombs.
From the trenches, reach out to you, calling for your solidarity and
supportin righteous attempt to raise the national consciousness of the
people - New Afrikans in particular.

‘Some time ago, I joined the team of Comrad Abdul O. Shakur,
president of the institute and Comrad Sharifa Abeni Shakur, who
Fommunity, public affirs and finances coordinator, for the institute.
This s in hopes of soliciting support here in the Midwest, as well as
propagating the aims and goals of both the New Afiikan Institute for
Criminology 101 and the George Jackson Foundation.

In this call, | am hoping to further my attempts to use all of the
consistent outside support bases, to broaden our outside membership
body, volunteers and coordinators. This is one of my first projects s
Midwest Coordinator of the Institute. Another comrad, named Sadiki
‘Mangwiro and I, are having a brief released, to be published for the
Indiana Political Prisoners on death row. This will be done to bring
outside sympathizers, supporters, and family members up to speed sbout
e lives and constant reality these men are forced to deal with, daily.
The name of the publication hasn’t been selected yet, but once it has

Currently, 1 am ironing out commitrents with outside comrads for
the participation in the organization of the Criminology 101 Political and

A Brief Desciption of Bro. Khalfani X. Khaldun 26

On December 13, 1994, after being transferved from the Indiana State
Prison, [ was investigated, (and later charged on January 31, 1995) with
the murder of a prison guard. Since then, [ have declared my innocence
and have been fighting 1o vindicate myself from his politically
motivated frame-up. It has been four years and two months now and
they have yet to bring this supposedly serious case, to tral. The new
trial date is tentatively scheduled for July 27, 1999,

Ihave speat almost 8 1/2 YEARS of my 13 years of incarceration, in
isolation. The reason for this is my political consciousness, which I have
endeavored 1o use as a (0ol to propagate inmatc awareness and personal
growth throughout the Indiana prisons. [ have assisted other comrads in
the formulation of educational classes, justified strikes, silent protests
and such, behind these walls. A class was recently organized here in
Westville, after myself and another comrad were transfered here on
